ECDL - Basic I.T. Skills
Training For All NHS Staff
ECDL is a flexible, modular qualification designed to cover the key
concepts of IT and its practical application in the workplace. It is
estimated that a complete novice should be able to complete the whole
qualification in about 100 hours while those with some IT skills can
complete it in as few as 20 hours. The on-line learning programme will
be delivered by a consortium led by Spring IT Training and including
Learn ECDL, and NCC Education. The consortium is the preferred
supplier, selected by the NHS Information Authority, and will offer a
national tracking and monitoring service for ECDL registrations and
access to the learning and testing materials.
ECDL - FAQs from
Communities (eg. NHS Trusts)
Do we have to be an Accredited Test Centre to Teach Staff? Do we have
to pay the BCS fee of £350? What do we have to do to become a test
centre? How do I contact the National Team? Will there be national
money to back fill staff time? Do we have to alter our network
configuration to run the software?
ECDL - NHS Homepage
The European Computer Driving Licence was established in 1988 by the
Finnish Computer Society and was quickly adopted as a National Standard
in IT competency in that country. During the early 1990's the
curriculum was developed and adopted by the EU member states as a
European Award. In 1996 the British Computer Society decided to promote
the ECDL within the UK and since that time the number of people
registering per year has grown to approximately 200,000 people in the
UK. Further information on ECDL ,access for NHS staff and useful links.
ECDL - NHS Voucher Scheme
"There are over a million staff employed in the NHSA in England and we
want to be able to offer every NHS employee the opportunity to gain the
ECDL qualification. The voucher scheme is the entry point to ECDL for
all staff. The voucher scheme allows the individual to assess their
ability and need to embark on the qualification prior to registering
with the British Computer Society (BCS). It would be too expensive and
may devalue the qualification if we were to issue every member of staff
with a Log Book before establishing their commitment to taking the
qualification."
ECDL - Project Update(Jan 2003) pdf file

NHS Staff must hold the ECDL or equivalent, or commit to gaining it
within 2 years from April 2003; • All NHS staff must have IT Skills
equivalent to the "Getting Started" and 40% of staff to have gained the
ECDL by March 2005; • All local health communities within each StHA
will have 2 fully accredited ECDL test centres by December 2003."
